Reasons to request SSDI
SSDI provides the disabled adult child with financial support, which is one of the primary reasons a person may request it. SSDI provides monthly disability benefit payments, which cover basic needs, medical expenses and other costs of daily living. These payments are important because it allows the disabled person to have independence, while preserving their savings and assets.
Medical expenses may include doctor visits, prescriptions, and therapy. Without SSDI benefits, it may be difficult for a disabled adult child to afford this treatment. In addition, SSDI may also cover the costs of accommodations like wheelchairs and accessible vehicles.
If a disabled adult child qualifies for SSDI, they may also be eligible for other programs like Medicare, Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Application process
The disabled adult child must meet eligibility requirements. They must be at least 18 years old, have a physical or mental impairment that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death, and must be unable to engage in substantial gainful activity.
It’s important to collect all relevant medical records about the condition before applying for benefits. The disabled child’s family member will need to complete a disability report with the application.
